What Is Arthrosamid®?

Arthrosamid® is a groundbreaking, non-surgical treatment for knee osteoarthritis offered by Dr Imbuldeniya at The West London Knee and Hip Clinic. This innovative polyacrylamide hydrogel treatment forms part of an Ortholongevity approach, focusing on preserving joint health, reducing pain and maintaining function for as long as possible without the need for early surgical intervention. It provides a long-lasting, injectable alternative to more invasive surgeries, such as knee replacements. Patients suffering from knee pain, joint stiffness and limited mobility can now benefit from this cutting-edge therapy, which cushions and lubricates the knee and improves joint function. The treatment is primarily offered at his base in Mayfair at The Lanserhof Clinic.

How Does Arthrosamid® Work?

Arthrosamid® is a 2.5% cross-linked polyacrylamide hydrogel which is a thick gel, injected directly into the synovial fluid of the knee joint using precise ultrasound guidance. This single injection integrates with the synovial tissue, providing cushioning and restores lost lubrication in the joint. By doing so, it helps to reduce knee pain and stiffness – while also improving mobility for patients with knee osteoarthritis.

The treatment is ideal for those seeking an effective, long-term alternative to surgery or for those who are not yet candidates for a knee replacement.

What Arthrosamid Offers

Benefits of Arthrosamid® Injections

  • Long-lasting pain relief Arthrosamid® provides sustained relief from joint pain, with results lasting up to 2-3 years for most patients.
  • Minimally invasive Performed as an outpatient procedure under local anaesthetic, Arthrosamid® does not require hospital admission or lengthy recovery times.
  • Proven effectiveness Clinical trials have demonstrated a significant reduction in pain by Week 4, with relief lasting for up to three years in some cases.
  • Safety With over 1 million units used worldwide for various medical conditions, Arthrosamid® is a biocompatible and safe injectable hydrogel backed by decades of research.

A Tailored Treatment for Long-Term Relief

With its proven ability to reduce pain and stiffness while improving movement, Arthrosamid® offers patients lasting relief without surgery. Each treatment is delivered under the expert care of Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Arjuna Imbuldeniya, using precise imaging to ensure safety and the best possible outcome. For many, it provides the missing link between short-term relief and more invasive options, helping restore comfort, confidence, and quality of life.

Arthrosamid® is designed for active adult patients suffering from moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis who are looking to delay or avoid knee replacement surgery. It is especially beneficial for those who have not responded to other injectable treatments, such as hyaluronic acid or PRP injections. Dr Imbuldeniya often recommends Arthrosamid® when other non surgical or minimally invasive treatments like physiotherapy, pain relief medication and keyhole knee surgery (arthroscopy) have not provided sufficient relief.

The procedure is quick and convenient. After the patient is given oral antibiotics and local anaesthetic to reduce infection risk, the injection site is located using ultrasound. The polyacrylamide hydrogel is then injected into the synovial capsule, where it integrates with the surrounding synovial tissue to provide cushioning and pain relief.

This entire process takes place in the clinic, allowing patients to return home the same day with minimal discomfort.

Most patients report significant pain relief within 4 weeks, with 80% experiencing sustained improvement for 2-3 years in recent studies. While individual results may vary, the majority of patients find Arthrosamid® offers a much-needed alternative to surgery and allows them to maintain an active lifestyle.
Extensive clinical trials have shown that Arthrosamid® is highly effective in reducing pain and improving function in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Ongoing studies aim to confirm the long-term benefits, but many patients have already reported up to 156 weeks (3 years) of sustained pain relief from a single injection. While no treatment is 100% effective for everyone, Arthrosamid® has proven to be a valuable new treatment option for those with knee arthritis. In a six-month prospective study, Bliddal, H., et al. reports that Arthrosamid® exceeded the MCID (minimal clinically important difference) of 9 points and improvement is maintained up to 4 years after a single injection.

Potential Side Effects

As with any medical procedure, there are potential side effects. These can include mild swelling, bruising, or pain at the injection site. In rare cases, infection or allergic reactions can occur. However, most patients tolerate the procedure well, with minimal adverse effects. We carefully monitor all patients after treatment to ensure their safety and comfort.

What to Expect from Your Arthrosamid® Treatment

From your first consultation through to the injection itself, every stage of the Arthrosamid® process is carefully designed to ensure safety, precision, and comfort.

  • Initial Consultation Your journey begins with a detailed consultation with Dr Arjuna Imbuldeniya, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and knee specialist. During this appointment, he will take time to understand your symptoms, review your medical history, and assess the severity of your knee osteoarthritis. You’ll have the opportunity to discuss previous treatments, your goals, and any concerns. Dr Imbuldeniya will then explain how Arthrosamid® works, what results to expect, and whether it’s the most appropriate option for your condition.
  • Tests and Assessment If required, diagnostic imaging such as X-rays, MRI, or ultrasound will be arranged to provide a clear picture of your knee joint and confirm suitability for treatment. These tests help identify the extent of cartilage wear, joint inflammation, or other factors that could influence your outcome. The results allow Dr Imbuldeniya to tailor the treatment precisely to your needs and plan the injection using ultrasound guidance for maximum accuracy.
  • The Injection Procedure The Arthrosamid® injection is a straightforward outpatient procedure that usually takes around 20–30 minutes. You’ll receive a local anaesthetic to minimise discomfort and oral antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection. Using real-time ultrasound, Dr Imbuldeniya accurately guides the injection into the synovial capsule of the knee joint, where the hydrogel integrates with the surrounding tissue to provide cushioning and long-term pain relief. Most patients can walk out of the clinic the same day and resume light activity within 24 hours.

Clinical studies show that a single Arthrosamid® injection can provide pain relief and improved joint function for up to three years in many patients. Results vary depending on the severity of knee osteoarthritis, but most people notice improvement within four weeks of treatment.

The injection is performed under local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable throughout. You may feel mild pressure or brief discomfort during the procedure, but most patients describe it as well tolerated. Any tenderness at the injection site usually settles within a day or two.

Most patients are able to walk out of the clinic and resume light activity the same day. We generally recommend avoiding high-impact exercise for a few days to allow the joint to settle. Dr Imbuldeniya will provide specific guidance based on your activity level and recovery progress.
